Hello everyone – the new season is upon us just like that!
Firstly, the subject on everyone’s lips: the weather. The rain has so far curtailed most of our efforts this pre-season: our traditional curtain-raiser against Rusthall couldn’t go ahead, but we played Penshurst on a very sticky rec in a good-natured, if rusty, affair. But, we can only assume that the skies will eventually brighten, and cricket will reign supreme once more.
SENIOR CRICKET
The senior league season starts this Saturday, the 8th, in a double header against out friends at Marden. Teamsheets will be released the Thursday prior to the match, so set your Spond availability now!
We also have a one-off T20 match v Tonbridge Common Room on May 9th, under warm evening skies — we hope.
We will require 22 players each Saturday to fill our two league teams and there are likely to be regular opportunities for anyone and everyone who wants to play. Once again our two teams are being led by the brilliant brace of Bens (Brandt and Harrison). If you know of anyone who is interesting in playing cricket for Speldhurst, or if you’d like to bring anyone in for a trial match, please get in touch!
JUNIOR CRICKET
Our fantastic, burgeoning junior cricket section has been busy training indoors for months, and are eagerly awaiting better weather in order to get outside and play some proper stuff. We are running league sides for U11, U13 and U15 this year, which is particularly exciting as we haven’t fielded an U15 team in several years. The fixtures are in the fixture card, so if you’re in the area please do pop down and support our youngsters!
FANTASY CRICKET
The deadline is fast approaching for our inaugural fantasy cricket competition! Please enter by midday on Saturday May 6th to be in with a chance of competing against your friends.
Some details: Choose six SCC cricketers, from a budget of £35m, to score points throughout the season based on their real-life performances. Each player is categorised as either a batsman. a bowler, an all rounder or a keeper. You must pick at least one player from each category and make one player your captain. There will be a cost of £5 per entry which will be requested via Spond once you have entered and there will a prize for the winner.
The sign-up link is on Spond. Get going!
CRICKET EQUIPMENT
Our kit supplier this year is still Gray Nicholls. If you need to order any more kit, our online shop has been recently restocked here.
Can I also take this opportunity to remind everyone of the Willowstix cricket sale that is offering excellent end-of-stock discounts to SCC members. See the earlier Spond post on April 2nd about this for more details.
FIXTURE CARD
Fixtures are on Play Cricket and Spond, but if you’re traditionally-minded there are still fixture cards available. Pick one up at your first match, or download the PDF here.

So, with appetites duly whetted (hopefully!), all that remains at this stage is to wish you all a glorious start to the season.
