The final element of Speldhurst CC’s 150th year celebrations played out in fine weather on Friday with the visit of the MCC to the Rec for an all-day match. And despite eventually losing by 81 runs, our team held its own for much of the game against some very impressive young cricketers.
The MCC batted first and posted 265-6 declared, the highlight being a commanding century from their number three. Our bowlers all maintained a good level of control in adversity and the fielding was also pretty sharp throughout.
In reply, most batsmen got starts but none reached 50 as we were bowled out for 184 with 6 overs of the final 20 remaining. Mike Jeffreys (44) and Dave Booth (36) were our two top scorers. The day was well attended and it was good to see many MCC players enjoying the full Speldhurst hospitality experience (including a Colman BBQ) after the game.
Many thanks to Francis Booth and Ed Wesson for making the day happen and to all those who contributed throughout: Philip Harrison for a quite exquisite lunch; Peter Colman for an unsurprisingly delicious BBQ; Peter Eames for his steadfast umpiring; and Alison Harrison, Paul Eames and all bar staff for their generous time-giving throughout the day.
