Message from the Chairman – June 2018

So, the season is now in full flow and our national summer sport has survived the overrun of the football season, didn’t we do well! The national teams are having a good run, and the England women’s team has just nailed down a convincing series win over the Kiwis. Nearer to home our 1st XI is riding high in the KCVL premier division, our 2nd XI continues to compete valiantly, our U13s have put together an unbeaten run at home (fortress Speldhurst) and our U11s have played competitive and enjoyable cricket with several good games.

Anyone who has wandered up to the Rec on a Saturday morning cannot fail to be impressed by the All Stars for sheer enthusiasm and numbers and our U9s group is growing at a fantastic rate. So can I say a big thank you to all the coaches, age group administrators, players secretaries, bacon buttie cooks, tea makers, impromptu bar and catering staff, umpires, scorers, newsletter editor, captains of adults and juniors, groundsman, treasurer, treasurer’s assistant, GDPR guru people, the committee, and our new website designers… in short a thank you from me to everyone who makes our club work and without you all nothing would happen.

So, things I need you all to do… everyone go and take a look at our new website speldhurstcricketclub.org.uk, which not only hosts a vast quantity of information about the club, but you can also see our previous results and a calendar of future fixtures. Can you please provide feedback and comments via the contact page on the web site so the team can undertake those fine tweaks which will make it even better. On the same theme this is the second month of the new-feel newsletter, so again can you let us know what works and doesn’t for you, so that our wonderful editor can improve it even more. Looking ahead we have the rest of the season’s league fixtures to play out, our junior coaching will reach its conclusion, and I hope that all our youngsters will be packing their cricket kit for their holidays.

Further ahead we now have confirmation from our archivist (yes, we do have one!) that the club will be 150 years old in 2019. This is a special milestone for Speldhurst CC and as such we are going to organise events throughout 2019 to celebrate the club’s history and ongoing involvement in the game, in our community, and ensuring that our youngsters and adults alike participate and progress in our summer sport. I would like the club to engage in a legacy approach to this special anniversary. One such legacy would be the development of viable girl’s/women’s cricket at a local/village level which would see the club serve our whole membership and community. But enough from me for now, please keep an eye out for news on events and plans for our exciting 2019 season and start spreading the word that our club will be 150 years old!
