20th July v Outwood
“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency” (Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson)… in that sense, this might well be the most successful Speldhurst season ever.
In a slightly different, potentially more realistic sense, this match sadly was a microcosm of the season. Playing a good team, not scoring any meaningful runs and being thoroughly outplayed were the negatives, but there were some bright spots to take away:
- Jo Price returning to play, bowling well and picking up two wickets with his slow/medium trundle.
- Ejas picked up his first 1st team wicket bowling some threatening deliveries.
- Harry Dunmall further extending his lead in the Battle of the Golden Ratio, and a new highest score of 48 in adult cricket.
- Harry Dunmall getting out on 48 trying to reverse sweep a spinner twice in a row, having never scored a 50 in adult cricket.
- Finally, young Tom Plunkett bowling a few very tidy overs at just 12 years old for the 1st team, with a great action and should have had a wicket but for Happy’s AWFUL drop behind the stumps. A name to keep in mind for the future.
Overall: we won the toss, I chose to bat. They bowled very well and hooped it, bowled us out for 88, with Dunmall the only one offering any form of meaningful resistance, outside a brief partnership with myself and Creef, and a resolute defensive effort from Mark Thorpe. They got it comfortably with 7 wickets in hand.
Thanks to Muddy for playing whilst being very ill, Tom Plunkett for stepping in to play when Freddie missed his name on the team sheet, and everyone else who played and gave maximum effort in a sadly losing effort.
